[:de]“Hanjo Schmidt arbeitet nach Fotografien, ohne zu kopieren. Er stellt sein Handwerk nicht in den Dienst des Motivs und verleugnet die Malerei nicht – etwa zugunsten eines vermeintlichen Realismus’ oder gar Fotorealismus’. Er malt mit Acryl und benutzt einfache flache Pinsel, mit denen er die Farbe in grobem, schnellem Strich aufträgt. Der Duktus ist laut und dominant. Die Farben orientieren sich zwar an dem Gesehenen, werden häufig aber ins Extrem übersteigert. Wir haben es mit expressiver Malerei zu tun, und diese Malerei schiebt sich quasi vor die Motive. Denn in keinem Moment gibt es Zweifel, dass wir es hier mit Malerei zu tun haben, mit dem Auftrag von Farbmaterie auf Fläche. Und doch wird man ständig wieder überrascht vom Wunder der Malerei: Auch mit diesem groben, rauen Strich wird das Modell äußerst präzise formuliert. Glänzende Augen, scharf konturierte Pupillen, sehniger Hals oder knochige Schulerblätter, alles wird eindeutig und ohne jeden Zweifel benannt – und dennoch ist es reine Malerei, die sich nicht illusionistisch dem Dargestellten unterordnet, die nicht so tut, als gäbe es sie gar nicht. Dieser Widerspruch, dass wir das Dargestellte deutlich erkennen, aber doch immer wissen, dass es sich „nur“ um Malerei handelt, das ist die eigentliche Herausforderung im Werk von Hanjo Schmidt. Er bietet eine Reibungsfläche, an der der Betrachter sich abarbeiten muss. Denn durch die Dominanz der Malerei wird die Rezeption gestört.
 
So repräsentieren die Gesichter und Körper in der Malerei Hanjo Schmidts die menschliche Kreatur an sich. Der Mensch als ambivalente Daseinsform, schön und hässlich zugleich, verletzlich und schroff, suchend und verweigernd, zeigend und versteckend. [:en]Hanjo Schmidt works with photographs without copying them. He does not force his craft to serve the motif and does not deny painting – for instance for the benefit of a supposed realism or even photo realism. For his works, he uses acrylic paint and simple flat brushes to apply the colour in rough and quick strokes. His ductus is loud and dominant. The colours are oriented on the things seen but are often exaggerated to the extreme. We are dealing with expressive painting and this painting is virtually putting itself in front of the motifs, because there is no moment to doubt that we are indeed dealing with painting, with the applying of colour material on a surface. However, the wonders of painting are still constantly surprising: In spite of these rough and quick strokes, the model is nonetheless depicted in a very precise manner. Shiny eyes, sharply contoured pupils, sinewy neck or bony shoulder blades, everything is named and shown unambiguously and without any doubt – but still, it is pure painting that does not illusionistically submit itself to the depicted and does not pretend not to exist. The real challenge of Hanjo Schmidt´s works lies in this contradiction, when we distinctly recognise the depicted even though we always know that it is „only“ a painting. He provides a source of friction that the observer has to deal with piece by piece because the reception is disrupted by the dominance of the painting.
 
Hence, the faces and bodies in Hanjo Schmidt´s painting represent the human creature itself. Man as an ambivalent form of life, beautiful and ugly all at once, vulnerable and harsh, searching and refusing, showing and hiding.
