Bühnenbildner und Roboterkünstler. Lebt und arbeitet seit 1986 in Barcelona.

Roland Olbeter absolvierte zunächst eine Ausbildung zum Konzertviolinisten und Schiffsbauer, bevor er sich intensiv der Arbeit an Theater und Oper und der Realisierung von Klang- und Bewegungsinstallationen zuwandte.

Olbeters Werke zeichnen sich durch eine technische Raffinesse aus, die im Theater und der bildenden Kunst ihresgleichen sucht. Zusammen mit Franc Aleu und Pere Tantiñá war er Mitglied des Maat-Kollektivs. Seine Arbeit konzentriert sich auf die Schaffung „unmöglicher Artefakte“. Gemeinsam mit anderen Künstlern realisierte er zahlreiche szenographische Projekte, z.B. im Rahmen der Olympischen Spiele 1992 in Barcelona, und arbeitete u.a. mit Bigas Luna, Jaume Plensa, Alfred Arribas, Enric Miralles und Xavier Mariscal zusammen. Für La Fura dels Baus und Marcel·lí Antúnez entwarf er eine Reihe von Großprojekten.

Die von Michael Gross komponierte Kammeroper „Orlando Furioso“ für fünf Musikroboter und Sopran wurde von Roland Olbeter konzipiert und inszeniert.

Das Design des Themenpavillons OIKOS für die Weltausstellung 2008 in Saragossa stammt ebenfalls von Olbeter, der zurzeit mit Carlos Padrisa und Franc Aleuan an der Inszenierung der vier Opern von Richard Wagners “Ring der Nibelungen” arbeitet.

Aktuell ist Roland Olbeter mit einem automatischen Marionettentheater beschäftigt, das in einem Container zur Musik von Kats Chernin aufgeführt wird.

Initially trained as a concert violinist and ship builder, has worked extensively in the theatre and opera, as well as on sound and movement installations.

His work has a technical sophistication that is most uncommon in theatre and the visual arts. He was a Maat Collective Member together with Franc Aleu and Pere Tantiñá. His work focuses on the creation of impossible artefacts. He has collaborated in multiple scenography projects ranging from the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 to collaborations with Bigas Luna, Jaume Plensa, Alfred Arribas, Enric Miralles and Xavier Mariscal, among others. He also designed many major pieces for La Fura dels Baus and Marcel·lí Antúnez.

Olbeter developed and directed the chamber opera, Orlando Furioso, for 5 music robots and soprano with music by Michael Gross.

He also designed the thematic OIKOS pavillion for EXPO 2008 in Zaragoza and is currently working on the four Richard Wagner operas from the The Ring of the Nibelung cycle together with Carlos Padrisa and Franc Aleu.

He is also currently working on an automatic puppet theatre inside a container, with music by Kats Chernin.
